Choosing the right diesel generator for your shop or office in Uganda

How to match generator size, fuel type and features to your actual load — covering Kampala shops, petrol stations, clinics and small manufacturing.

Why generator sizing is different from solar sizing

A generator must handle your peak simultaneous load, not just your average daily consumption. Unlike a battery, a generator cannot "store" capacity — if you start a motor that draws 5 kW, the generator must supply that 5 kW instantly. Undersizing leads to voltage sag, engine hunting, and premature wear.

Step 1 – Calculate your peak load

List every load that could run at the same time. Pay special attention to motors (fridges, pumps, compressors, lifts) because they draw 3–6× their rated wattage at startup.

Choose a generator whose rated output covers running watts and whose surge/peak output covers start-up surges. For this example, a 5 kVA generator (rated ~4 kW continuous, surge ~5.5 kW) fits well.

Step 2 – Diesel or petrol?

Diesel generators are the standard choice for businesses in Uganda:

  • Diesel is 30–40% more fuel-efficient than petrol at equivalent load
  • Diesel engines last 10,000–30,000 hours vs 1,000–3,000 hours for petrol
  • Diesel is safer to store (higher flash point)
  • Parts and service mechanics are widely available in Kampala, Jinja, Mbarara

Petrol (gasoline) generators make sense only for:

  • Occasional use (weekend camping, field events)
  • Very small loads under 2 kVA where diesel units are physically large
  • Sites where diesel is hard to source

Step 3 – Key specifications to check

kVA vs kW: Manufacturers quote in kVA (apparent power). Real (active) power kW = kVA × power factor (typically 0.8). A "5 kVA" generator delivers ~4 kW to resistive loads. Always check the kW rating in the datasheet.

Rated vs standby output: Standby rating assumes maximum 200 hours/year at full load with utility power available. If you run the generator daily (as most Ugandan businesses do), use the prime-rated or continuous-rated output, which is typically 10% lower than standby.

Alternator quality: Chinese alternators vary widely. Brands like Mecc Alte (Italian-designed, assembled locally) and Leroy-Somer carry a reputation for cleaner sine waves, important if you have sensitive electronics.

Noise (dB): Open-frame generators run at 72–85 dB at 7 metres — too loud for office environments. Acoustic canopies (soundproof enclosures) reduce noise to 65–72 dB. Expect to pay 30–50% more for a canopy model.

Step 4 – ATS (Automatic Transfer Switch)

If you want the generator to start automatically when Umeme cuts out, you need an ATS. Budget UGX 350,000–900,000 for a quality ATS depending on your panel amperage. The ATS senses mains failure, signals the generator to crank, waits for it to stabilise (~10–15 seconds), then transfers your load. When mains returns, it transfers back and allows the generator to cool down before shutting off.

Uganda-specific considerations

Fuel quality: Adulterated diesel is a real problem. Use a reputable petrol station and keep a stock of fuel filter elements — replace them every 250 hours or when output starts to fluctuate.

Service intervals: In Uganda's dust and heat, change engine oil every 100–150 hours (not the 250 hours on the sticker). Use the correct viscosity — 15W-40 is appropriate for Uganda's temperatures.

Governor type: Electronic governors maintain frequency (50 Hz) much better under load changes than mechanical governors. Important for variable loads like compressors and lifts.

  • Entry (1–5 kVA): Kipor, Lutian — budget reliable for occasional use
  • Mid (5–30 kVA): Perkins-powered or Cummins-powered sets from local assemblers; FG Wilson
  • Heavy duty (30+ kVA): Cummins, Caterpillar, Volvo Penta — with local service agents in Kampala

For most Kampala shops, a 7.5–10 kVA prime-rated diesel with a canopy and ATS is the sweet spot between cost and reliability.
