Choosing a power drill for construction work in Uganda
A buyer's guide to corded and cordless drills, hammer drills and rotary hammers for Ugandan construction sites — covering power, battery platforms and durability in dusty conditions.
Which drill type do you actually need?
Four categories exist and they are not interchangeable:
- Drill/driver (corded or cordless): Rotary drilling in wood, plastic, soft masonry plus screwdriving. Not suitable for concrete or hard block.
- Hammer drill: Adds percussion to the rotation. Suitable for brick and medium-density concrete blocks (common in Kampala buildings). Not suitable for reinforced concrete slabs or rock.
- Rotary hammer (SDS-Plus / SDS-Max): Heavy percussion-only or combination mode. The correct tool for drilling holes in concrete columns, slabs and dense masonry. Uses SDS chucks — bits are not interchangeable with standard chucks.
- Impact driver: High torque for fastening long screws and coach bolts. Not a drilling tool by default (though can drill with proper bits). Essential for timber frame construction.
Corded vs cordless
Corded drills deliver consistent power regardless of battery state, weigh less per unit of power output, and cost less. The limitation in Uganda is obvious: power supply is not reliable on construction sites, and trailing cables are a tripping hazard.
Cordless drills (18 V or 20 V lithium-ion platforms) have transformed site productivity. A fully charged 4 Ah battery drives an 18 V hammer drill for 3–4 hours of normal drilling. Keep two batteries on rotation.
Choosing a battery platform matters more than choosing a drill model. Once you buy into a platform (Makita 18 V, DeWalt XR, Bosch 18 V, Milwaukee M18), all future tools — saws, grinders, lights, routers — share the same batteries. This is the key purchase decision.

What to look for on the label
Maximum torque (Nm): Higher is better for drilling hard materials. A good 18 V hammer drill should have 60–80 Nm. An impact driver should have 180+ Nm.
No-load speed (RPM): Higher RPM is good for small holes in wood; lower RPM with high torque is better for large masonry holes. Variable speed trigger and two-speed gearbox give you both.
Chuck size: 10 mm for light duties, 13 mm for site drills. SDS chucks are a separate category.
IP rating: Construction sites are dusty and occasionally wet. Look for IP54 minimum on site tools. Most professional-grade corded and cordless tools from Bosch Professional, Makita, DeWalt and Milwaukee meet this standard.
Battery care in Uganda's climate
Lithium-ion batteries degrade faster above 40°C. Do not leave batteries in direct sunlight or in a closed vehicle. After heavy use, allow batteries to cool before charging — rapid charging of a hot battery shortens lifespan significantly.
Dust is the primary killer of cordless tool motors. After dusty concrete or block drilling, blow out the motor vents with compressed air weekly.
Brands and where to buy in Uganda
Professional grade: Makita, DeWalt, Bosch Professional, Milwaukee — available at verified tool dealers in Kampala. Buy only from authorised stockists to avoid clone batteries (common and dangerous).
Good value: Ingco (South African brand, widely distributed in East Africa), Ronix, Total Tools — solid performance at 40–60% of premium brand cost. Suitable for small contractors.
Avoid: No-brand cordless drills sold in electronics markets. Clone batteries (fires have occurred). "Bosch" branded tools without the blue Professional logo (green Bosch is the consumer range — lighter duty).
Maintenance extends tool life
- Clean chuck jaws after every cement job (cement sets in the chuck)
- Apply light oil to bit shank before inserting in SDS chuck
- Replace brushes on corded drills every 200–300 hours (brushes are cheap; rewinding an armature is expensive)
- Store batteries at 40–60% charge if not used for more than 2 weeks
