How to choose a distribution board (DB box) for your building in Uganda

A practical guide to selecting the right consumer unit or distribution board for homes, shops and commercial buildings — covering breaker sizing, load balancing and Umeme compliance.

What is a distribution board?

A distribution board (DB box or consumer unit) is the central point where your building's electrical supply is divided into circuits, each protected by a circuit breaker. Every building in Uganda connected to Umeme (or running on a generator or solar inverter) needs a correctly sized and installed DB.

Main components

Incomer breaker (main breaker): The master switch that disconnects all circuits simultaneously. Size it to match your supply rating — most residential Umeme supplies are 32 A or 63 A single-phase.

MCBs (Miniature Circuit Breakers): Protect individual circuits. Common ratings:

  • 6 A: lighting circuits
  • 16 A: socket outlet circuits, dishwasher, washing machine
  • 20 A: air conditioner (1 HP)
  • 32 A: electric shower, large AC, welding socket
  • 63 A: three-phase motor or large industrial load

RCDs/RCCBs (Residual Current Devices): Detect earth faults and disconnect within 30 ms — mandatory for bathroom and kitchen circuits under Uganda's wiring regulations (based on IEE 17th Edition). A 30 mA sensitivity RCD protects against electrocution.

Busbar and neutral bar: Distribute phase and neutral connections to individual breakers.

How many ways (slots) do you need?

Count your planned circuits and add 25% for future expansion. A typical 3-bedroom Kampala home needs:

  • 4 lighting circuits
  • 4 ring main socket circuits
  • 1 kitchen dedicated circuit (cooker/microwave)
  • 1 hot water/geyser circuit
  • 2 AC circuits
  • 1 outdoor/garage circuit
  • Total: 13 ways → buy an 18-way board to allow growth

For a small shop: typically 6–12 ways suffices. For a multi-storey commercial building, use a separate DB per floor fed from a main LV panel.

Three-phase vs single-phase

Most Ugandan homes receive single-phase supply (two wires: phase + neutral). Commercial and industrial premises usually receive three-phase supply (four wires: three phases + neutral). If you have three-phase, your DB must be rated for 415 V (line-to-line) and balance loads across all three phases.

Phase balancing: When selecting three-phase, spread loads evenly — equal total amperage on each phase. Unbalanced loading causes neutral current, increased losses and can trip the street transformer.

What to look for in a DB box

Brand and certification: Buy boards with CE or BS EN 60439 certification. Schneider Electric (Acti9 range), ABB (Mistral) and Legrand (DX3) are available in Kampala at verified electrical wholesalers. Avoid uncertified boards from open-air markets — plastic quality and busbar rating are often substandard.

IP rating: For indoor domestic use, IP30 is acceptable. For garages, external meter rooms or any area exposed to dust or moisture, use IP65 minimum.

Busbar current rating: The internal busbar must be rated above your incomer breaker. A 63 A incomer needs a 63 A or higher busbar — many cheap boards have 40 A busbars installed behind a 63 A incomer breaker (dangerous undersizing).

Neutral and earth bars: There must be separate neutral and earth bars. In Uganda, it is common but incorrect to bond neutral and earth inside the consumer unit on TN-C-S (PME) systems — confirm with your supply authority.

Compliance and inspection

After installation, an electrician must issue an Electrical Installation Completion Certificate and the supply authority may inspect before energising. In Uganda, electrical contractors must be registered with the Uganda Institution of Professional Engineers (UIPE) or hold an Electrical Contractor licence from the relevant authority. Always use a licensed installer — illegal wiring is a leading cause of fires in Kampala.
